Did you know the Arctic is actually full of life?

In the frigid waters around Greenland and the Canadian Arctic exists a world that is surprisingly biodiverse. Every organism plays a role in a delicate food web that makes up the Arctic ecosystem. And the foundation of it all is sea ice.

The underside of sea ice provides a perfect surface for algae to grow. That algae feeds tiny crustaceans called amphipods. Amphipods feed fish, which in turn feed seabirds, seals, walruses, and cetaceans like narwhals and belugas. At the top of the food chain are orcas, polar bears, and humans, all of whom depend on the life below for survival.
