## Caption

Earlier this year, a landmark international treaty on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity entered into force.

Marking one of the most significant environmental agreements of our lifetime, it aims to safeguard life in areas beyond national waters — which represents more than two-thirds of the ocean — by establishing marine protected areas and ensuring that the benefits of the high seas are shared equitably.

The ocean holds nearly 80% of all animal biomass and supports the livelihoods, food security and well-being of 3 billion people.

Protecting the high seas will help restore ocean health, rebuild fish stocks, and support coastal communities that rely on the ocean for food, jobs and stability.

Adopted under the auspices of the #UnitedNations, the treaty is a breakthrough for multilateralism — and for efforts to #SaveOurOcean.
