Michelle and Chris Knoll started raising chickens on their Madison County farm about a year ago, a hobby that helped shield family and friends' pocketbooks when egg prices tripled last year.

With prices still high, there's still plenty of demand.

The Knoll family decided to expand their flock this year. But they had to scramble to get 40 more chicks at a nearby bomgaarssupply store.

“It was kind of a fight to get the birds you wanted,” she said. “They went very, very quickly."
