Fourth year deep and these are just some of my pointers! 👇

Show up in the places you want to be found. Show. Up. Be connected with the environment you want to call home. Shoot some free trial games for your local team. The work will find you if they know where to look.

On that note, at first… Shoot. For. Free. Realistically, you MUST volunteer or intern before you just enter a paid position in this industry. Show people you want to grow the game and be helpful. Figure out what works and what doesn’t. Give a little and receive a lot of love! All my jobs have started out from me purely wanting to do a game or two in my free time, and the outcome has been better than I imagined!

Immerse yourself in the sport. Photographers will know what looks good to them, but you need you know the game to understand what looks good to players. Watch games in your free time. Watch documentaries or short films and get in the mind of the player.
(“Faceoff” on Amazon Prime or “The Road to the Beach” by Luke Bitikofer on YouTube are some of my recs!).

Make some friends!! Be a friendly face. Make conversation with strangers. Make eye contact and smile at someone. Professionalism is always a must but make your presence attractive! People don’t want creeps or shy people in their environment. Keep it positive!

Be a creature of habit. Notice what shots you take every game, when, where - make a mental shotlist. (or physical!). The more rhythm you build over time, the more things flow. They really don’t lie when they say “You learn something new every time”. Take that to your advantage and build a workflow.

I could talk about my job until your ears bleed, but if I could go back and tell myself what to focus on in the beginning, these would be at the top of my list!
