Just over 22,000 Alabamians lost American Care Act marketplace coverage this year, federal data shows.

The decline is due to enhanced tax credits, which helped reduce the cost of healthcare, expiring on Dec. 31, 2026.

Experts warn the enrollment numbers released this week are preliminary and likely to change. The open enrollment period closed in Alabama on Jan. 15.

The credits were first given to ACA enrollees in 2021 to temporarily help during the COVID-19 pandemic. Democrats in power extended the expiration to 2026.

According to the Alabama Department of Insurance, premium increases were: 19.3% for Blue Cross Blue Shield, 20% for UnitedHealthcare Insurance and 25% for Celtic Insurance Company.
