TRASH PIT DIG UPDATE! From Archaeologist Chuck Meide:

The Lighthouse Maritime Archaeology Program’s ongoing investigation excavation of the recently discovered trash pit at the Lighthouse continued this week. We got down so deep in our excavation unit that it was difficult to reach down while supported by a plank spanning the hole, since there was so much fragile material at the bottom that we couldn’t get an archaeologist down into the pit itself.

We finally got to the bottom of the original trash pit at the end of the day on Wednesday, which was our fifteenth day of digging! We got to a depth of about 1.55 meters (over five feet) below the ground surface!

This may have been an old privy that was filled with trash when it was no longer needed, perhaps around 1900-1910.

We have organized all of the finds into labeled bags according to how deep and what part of the excavation unit they were found at, and have begun boxing them up and transporting them to the Deagan Archaeology Lab at Flagler College.

The students in Flagler College’s Advanced Artifact Analysis class will sort, wash, analyze, and identify the material by type and date. 

They have already washed three trays of artifacts! Their analysis will help us understand how and for how long this spot was used to dispose of the Keepers’ and their families trash, and give us insight into what they ate, drank, what medicines they used, what toys the children played with at the time, what furnishings they had in the Keepers’ House, and what items and tools were used in the Lighthouse and throughout the Light Station.
