The 50th anniversary of the first event in the UNI-Dome is the perfect day to recognize the man behind the iconic space, Stan Sheriff. 50 years ago on this day, UNI wrestling took on the University of Iowa in the first ever event in the Dome!

This event, and each one since, would not have been possible without a vision that UNI athletic director and coach Stan Sheriff turned into reality. Long before the structure became a symbol of Panther pride, it began as his bold idea — a dream to give the University of Northern Iowa a home that would elevate its athletic programs and unite the campus community.

From concept to groundbreaking to a storm that was too strong for the fabric, Stan's concept slowly became a reality and in 1976, the UNI-Dome was born.

From wrestling meets to Commencement, hot air balloons to RAGBRAI, basketball, concerts, football and everything in between, the UNI-Dome is a standing legacy showing Stan’s commitment to opportunity and investment.

Stan's legacy extends beyond the Dome’s walls. Before taking on the role of athletic director, he had already made his mark as one of UNI’s most successful football coaches. During a remarkable 22-season tenure, UNI football achieved more wins than with any other coach in school history, claiming six conference titles, 15 winning seasons and four bowl appearances.

In recognition of his vision and leadership, the football field inside the UNI-Dome proudly bears his name, Sheriff Field, a lasting reminder of the power of determination. Learn more about Stan at the link in our bio 🔗
