According to a 2019 study published in the journal Current Research in Food Science, the healthy blend is even more effective when paired with a cheese plate and some tomato and cucumber.

The researchers, based at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, said: "A beverage made from a blend of sweet lime, pear, and coconut water could be used to overcome a hangover."

"Consuming this beverage with cheese, cucumber, and tomatoes may further alleviate the symptoms."

Pear makes up most of the drink at 65%, followed by sweet lime (25%) and coconut water (10%).

They help bolster the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase (found in the liver) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (found in the liver, kidneys, and lungs) by 23% and 70%, respectively.

_____

Both enzymes tackle acetaldehyde, which is what alcohol is converted into when it enters the body.

While the drink of coconut water, pear, and lime is particularly efficient at alleviating hangover symptoms like headaches and nausea, so are wheat-based cereals and some spices like ginger.

The study suggests you stay well clear of milk, oats, eggs, and spices, including pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon, and coffee is also listed among their ultimate hangover no-nos.

It is said to decrease the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase "by a large magnitude," which could potentially result in a prolonged hangover.

Green tea and black tea are said to be more helpful.
