A lot of people walked right past this.

I bought this Fornasetti desk for $450.

It’s one of those pieces that looks decorative if you don’t know what you’re looking at — but if you do, it’s unmistakable. I recognized it immediately based on three things:

• the maker’s mark
• the silhouette
• the butterfly motif, which Fornasetti collectors know is both rare and highly sought after

Other Fornasetti desks have sold for $26,500 (and the butterfly motif is even more highly sought after!) 

And no — this wasn’t luck.
This is what happens when you train your eye. When you stop shopping for “cute” and start shopping for authorship, design language, and provenance.
