Prince's 2007 Super Bowl XLI halftime show nearly didn't happen. Heavy downpours over Miami's Dolphin Stadium threatened to cancel the performance entirely. When the show's producers expressed concern, Prince had one question for them—"Can you make it rain harder?"⁠ ⁠ In an oral history published by The Ringer, those who were there (producers to band members to Prince's personal assistant) recount how the performance came together. It had been months in the making. Prince designed a setlist that defied expectations; in addition to his own hits, he covered artists including Queen, the Foo Fighters, and Jimi Hendrix, among others. "He wanted to do the greatest Super Bowl show ever done," recalls his musical director Morris Hayes. ⁠ ⁠ On game day as the storm began to intensify, the producers suggested Prince lip-sync for safety reasons. He responded, "I'm Prince, I'm gonna play live." One technician in the stage crew literally held stripped electrical cables with pliers for the entire twelve minutes to keep the lights running.⁠ ⁠ The rain, of course, became a defining element of the show. 140 million people tuned in worldwide.
