#SaturdayStorytime - Feeling Young
2025 I went back to SoCal as team captain. It’s a cool honor to be voted in as captain, anything that’s voted on feels pretty special. It is however a big responsibility because of the captains challenge. Everyone else is done for the weekend I’ve gotta line up for the highest pressure event worth the most points. Against Tia no less. Pressure is a privilege, but next time, please, let me rest… 😂
With the addition of emma.lawson_5 and oliviakerstetter we had a young squad. One evening while doing a little team building I realized that Olivia is actually closer to my son’s age than my age. Wrap your head around that.
Generally being around that crew makes me feel young, but unfortunately it’s just not the case. I’m over 35 now so I have GERD. Basically acid reflux for you youngsters out there, and it was kicking my ass that weekend. On Saturday evening I was battling warming up burpees and didn’t feel like throwing up on the floor so I asked medical if they had any antacids. Someone from athlete control came to find me a few minutes later with a bottle of TUMS. I grabbed a few and handed the bottle back. they said “do you wanna just keep the bottle?”. I said “no you guys should keep it in case anyone else needs some” to which the replied “Vellner, nobody else is gonna need them…”
Touché. 👴🏻 I gave them back on principal, but I did go back to the well a couple more times that weekend.
I survived my captains duties with Danielle and we won back to back titles in a tight battle. Feels better that way. On the home front we also went back to back on kids being violently ill during TYR Cup. My parents came so we were able to ship Owen over to them to keep him safe but Ethan got super sick and Michelle had to be a hero again this year. He couldn’t keep anything down. Both ends. Friday he had no fluids left to pee so She took him to the hospital to get rehydrated and get some answers.
Needless to say I washed my hands a lot that weekend. The last thing I wanted was internal sabotage of our team, though I did briefly consider passing him around to team world during a briefing.
I’ll save biological warfare for next year…
