Today, the City Clerk certified the results of the April 4, 2023 general municipal election, officially sending me to the May 16 mayoral runoff election. Because no mayoral candidate received more than 50% of the votes, the top two vote-getters move to the runoff.

As I reflect on this moment, I want to first thank all of the other candidates who made the commitment and sacrifice to run for public office. Though there are differences among us, we all share the same commitment and vision to see a better Colorado Springs. I applaud them for participating in the democratic process by entering the arena and ultimately being subject to the criticism of friends, neighbors, and strangers. They raised their hand when others didn’t, and no one can take that from them. I am honored to have gone through this experience with them and look forward to collaborating with these leaders.

In light of sallieclark's concession this morning, I also want to commend her on her campaign. Her experience in our community is evident through her intimate knowledge of the issues, and she ran a professional, grassroots campaign that engaged Colorado Springs residents. She highlighted opportunities we have to help our neighborhoods thrive by addressing important issues like homelessness, public safety, and roads, and voters resonated with her fresh ideas and commitment to a transparent and inclusive government that serves all residents fairly.

I look forward to the mayoral runoff election and focusing on the challenges facing our community, including crime and public safety, affordability, infrastructure, and economic vitality. Our city is hungry for leadership that rises above mudslinging and negative campaigning, for leaders who focus on the issues that impact our families, and for pragmatic, innovative solutions to our most pressing challenges. Colorado Springs is at an important inflection point, and voters have the opportunity to decide if we continue to be a city for the few or a city for the many that puts our families first. As residents continue to do their research, I look forward to working hard to earn their votes during this important election.
