Across Himalayan art, horses often appear alongside guardian deities, reinforcing themes of protection, vigilance, and movement.

Guardian figures such as Pelden Lhamo, a protectress of the Buddhist teachings, are frequently shown riding horses and mules, with her animal companion conveying speed, authority, and resolve. 

In these works, horses and mules function as more than modes of transport. They signal the capacity to traverse realms and act in service of wisdom, underscoring the protective role of these deities.

This year, Losar—Tibetan New Year—welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse! To mark the occasion, we’re exploring the many ways horses appear in our collection of Himalayan art.
