Starting this weekend, Seollal — Korea’s biggest holiday — is officially here!

It’s a time when people head back to their hometowns to spend quality time with family, but it’s also when everyone braces themselves for the infamous holiday traffic 😮‍💨

These days, even 7–9 hours driving from Seoul to Busan feels exhausting. But 30–40 years ago? Holiday travel could take up to 16 hours.

There were fewer cars back then, but the roads and infrastructure weren’t nearly as developed. Bus terminals and train stations were just as packed as the highways.

Still, despite the long and exhausting journey, people were filled with excitement about going home. It wasn’t unusual to see families step out of their cars on the highway, laughing, chatting, and somehow finding joy in the middle of all that congestion.

Traveling for the holidays is definitely easier now, but sometimes it feels like that warm, old-school holiday vibe has slowly faded away.

As much as we’ve grown and moved forward so fast, maybe it’s worth pausing to think about what we’ve left behind along the way.

돌아오는 주말부터 한국의 최대 명절 설 연휴가 시작됩니다! 

가족과 함께 고향으로 돌아가 즐거운 시간을 보내는 명절이지만, 많은 사람들이 걱정하는 악명 높은 교통체증의 찾아오는 시기이기도 하죠. 요즘 서울에서 부산까지 차로 7 ~ 9시간이 걸려도 힘든데, 30~40년 전엔 명절 대이동이 16시간이나 걸리곤 했답니다! 

그땐 차량이 훨씬 적었지만, 지금처럼 도로와 인프라가 잘 발달하지 않았었죠. 버스 터미널과 기차역 역시 혼잡하기로는 고속도로 못지않았어요. 

그럼에도 불구하고, 힘든 여정 속에서도 사람들은 고향에 가는 설렘으로 가득했어요. 고속도로 위에 차를 세워두고 나와 웃고 떠들며 그 혼잡 속에서 재미를 찾는 모습도 흔했답니다. 

요즘은 명절을 보내기 훨씬 편해졌지만, 예전 그 특유의 정겨운 분위기는 점점 사라진 것 같아 아쉽기도 해요. 빠르게 발전해 온 만큼, 우리가 놓치고 온 것들에 대해 생각해보는 것도 좋겠네요.
