A resignation announcement from Chancellor Kent Syverud and views from the Great New York State Fair feature in The Daily Orange’s first regular print issue of the year.

News: Chancellor Kent Syverud, who has served as SU’s chancellor and president for 12 years, announced his departure in a campus-wide email Tuesday. Students and community leaders had mixed opinions on Syverud’s tenure.

Fair forever: The New York State Fair began in 1841 to promote the region’s agriculture. Nearly two centuries and a handful of name changes later, it’s grown into a central New York staple that attracts thousands of visitors annually. Design by @lilyzuckerman.

Culture: The New York State Fair is home to a wide selection of never-before-seen foods — from Dr. Pepper-pickle juice to Fruity Pebble mozzarella sticks. Some attendees are trying these eats for the very first time, while others return each year for their Fair favorites.

Opinion: Our essayist reflects on the preconceived notion that reaching college requires abandoning everything associated with childhood to prove maturity. They argue students should trust their instincts and follow their own timelines rather than conform to a strict pathway of outside expectations.

@dailyorangesports: In 2023, Mia Klammer found herself without a team after the unexpected closure of her school, The College of St. Rose. Now in Orange for her fifth season, she’s bounced back from last year’s knee injury and is prepared to end her college career on her terms. Design by @caroline_daugherity.
