What happened in the few minutes before this photo was taken is something I will never forget.

Marvin and I had the opportunity to meet michelleobama when she was on her book tour. I recited exactly what I wanted to say to her over and over again because I knew I had a limited time to tell her my impressions of the book and how much of an inspiration she was to me.

When it was our turn, she looked over at us and said, “Come on over here you two!” I couldn’t fight back the tears—especially considering I was pregnant with Summer and super hormonal. Marvin said, “Well there’s actually three of us,” at which point she looked down and giddily said, “Oh my goodness congratulations! Girl, you look good—I didn’t even notice!” I told her my spiel through the tears while she held both of my hands in the warmest, most familiar way.

After Marvin talked to her, we were about to take a photo when I shared that we were having a girl. She got so excited and talked about how wonderful it was to be a girl mom. I’ll never forget her looking right at Marvin and telling him how incredibly important he would be in shaping the woman our daughter would become. As we got into position for the picture, I asked, “Can we take a bump pic?” and she curiously said, “I don’t know what that is.” I told her she would put her hand on my belly for a photo, but I totally understood if she wasn’t comfortable doing that. Without hesitation she said, “Oh, yes! I would love that!”

And just like that, the First Lady became Summer’s Godmother. 😉
