Today is Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when the news of freedom reached the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater observes this day by streaming Donald Byrd’s Greenwood, an ensemble work that draws on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre as a source. For a limited time you can watch Greenwood in its entirety on the Ailey website.
