Mb Diop ‘24 is a Fashion Merchandising major and a business minor, and has always been interested in the behind-the-scenes of the fashion world.

“I love just seeing how the background works in a fashion show, you know, putting it all together, it’s what really drew me to the major. I’m usually more of a creative person, but I just thought it would be fun to also see the other side of it.”

Diop, who is a junior, has been thinking about ideas for a capping project, and said she is interested in creating a small business for it. She mentioned that she and a friend have wanted to start a business together, and they would use their combined knowledge of fashion design, merchandising, and business to do it. When asked what she wanted her business to promote, Diop said, “Honestly, as a person of color, I really want to include everyone…something that’s inclusive to everyone, whether you dress modestly or you don’t. It would be mostly streetwear, because you know, I’m from New York, I got to go with streetwear.”

On campus, Diop is a member of Mon Afrique, which is a program led by students who come together to showcase African culture. Diop is in charge of the fashion department in the club; “Currently I’m in charge of the fashion department, we actually just got out of a meeting, trying to put things together, we are actually trying to do a promotional shoot so hopefully that happens soon. Most of the time we just rent clothes from tailors, so we have to go to the city, check out the clothes and things like that.”

Diop continued, saying, “There’s a fashion show, there’s food from different places in Africa, there’s dance, it’s a showcase. There’s an event on April 22nd, so stay tuned! It’s really fun, and I wish more people knew about it, because it’s a really nice event!”
