Ariela Barer, who is of Mexican-Jewish descent and is known for her roles in “The Last of Us” and “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” has joined the cast of A24’s “Deep Cuts,” which is based on Holly Brickey’s novel of the same name and follows two twenty-somethings as they navigate love, life, belonging, and adulthood. She’ll take on the role of Zoe Gutierrez, who is described as half-Mexican and half-Jewish in the book, replacing Odessa A’zion, who exited the film following major backlash over her casting. 

“So excited to be a part of this special project with such special people!” Barer wrote on her Instagram Stories. “And a genuine major shoutout to Odessa A’zion for always leading with integrity and being an absolute real one for as long as I’ve known her.”
