"I started making notes for what would become WRECKS during those disturbing yet sunny first weeks of lockdown, spring 2020. At the time, I was working long days in a hot shed, doing my bit to parent a nine-month-old, and deeply anxious about the future -- all of which clearly bleached into the story, whose characters struggle through oppressive heat, and struggle to reach each other.

"Six years on, with a now-six-year-old asking me for snacks, I can look at the finished thing as a kind of diary, haunted as it is by images and echoes from that period. It's not a pandemic novel, exactly -- it's about a rally driver and his mechanic, and their odd relationship -- but it's definitely a novel that could only have emerged from the pandemic.

For that reason, I hope it also manages to channel some of the rare moments of intense connection and beauty we all shared with each other, with strangers. Because even in weird times, or especially in weird times, I think it's those we have to cling to."
