The Holliwell Covered Bridge that Meryl Streep leaned against for a photo in a scene from the summer 1995 hit movie "The Bridges of Madison County" still stands ― but unsteadily.

After years of deferred maintenance, it's no longer able to accommodate vehicular traffic and is approaching the point where even pedestrians could exceed its structural capacity, which would force the county to close the beloved Iowa tourist attraction as it continues to crumble away, said Mike Hackett, Madison County engineer.

That's why the bridge leads the newly released list of Preservation Iowa's six most-endangered Iowa historic properties for 2026. Hackett said he welcomes the listing, hoping it will raise awareness of the potential demise of the Holliwell bridge.
