Last month, the Department of Education found that California California Assembly Bill
1955 - which prohibits an educational entity from disclosing any student’s sexual orientation or gender identity to any other person without the student’s consent - violates parents’ rights codified in
FERPA. Under FERPA, parents have the right to access their children’s “education record,” which contains information about individual students kept by educational institutions.
