#TSRPolitics: House Republicans quickly passed a bill on Wednesday that would create stricter voting requirements ahead of the midterm elections.

The measure, known as the SAVE America Act, is a priority for the #DonaldTrump administration but is expected to face strong opposition in the Senate.

The bill would require people to show proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a valid passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote. It would also require voters to show a valid photo ID before casting a ballot, something some states already require. The House approved the bill in a mostly party-line vote of 218–213.

Republicans say the bill is necessary to prevent voter fraud. Democrats argue it could make voting more difficult for millions of eligible Americans. Current federal law already requires voters in federal elections to be U.S. citizens, but it does not require them to show official documents proving it.

Experts say voter fraud is very rare, and only a small number of noncitizens have ever been found to vote. According to the Brennan Center Survey in 2023, 3.8 million Americans don’t have proof of citizenship documents.
