HB392, a bill from Rep. Chip Brown, R-Hollinger’s Island, would shift the three members on the Public Service Commission from elected to appointed by the governor, starting in 2028. It’s part of a package that would adjust regulations and incentives for power companies and data centers.

In a committee meeting last week, Brown said having the governor appoint commissioners would add accountability and defend the agency from “out of state interests.”

Other lawmakers, members of the public, advocates and people running for the commission questioned Brown’s assertions that the change would end up helping Alabama residents. Reporting by Ruth Serven Smith and Mike Cason. #alabama #psc #publicservicecommission #alabamapower
