The powerful figure of Shiva appears in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions—and tonight is his sacred night.

Tonight marks Mahashivaratri, the “Great Night of Shiva,” observed across the Himalayas. Devotees gather at temples to fast, sing, dance, and keep vigil through the night in honor of the Great God.

Known as Mahādeva (“Great God”) and Maheshvara (“Great Sovereign”), Shiva is associated with yogic wisdom, transformation, and creative destruction. He is often depicted surrounded by ganas—a diverse community of spirits, ascetics, and outsiders—reflecting a spiritual world that embraces difference.

While Shiva is widely known as a Hindu deity, he is also revered in Neva and Tibetan Buddhist traditions as a powerful protector. In Tibetan, he is called Lha chen po, a direct translation of Mahādeva.

In this work from the Rubin’s collection, Lha chen po appears with his consort Umā. Look closely for the crescent moon in his matted hair—an iconic detail that identifies him as Shiva.
