This Valentine’s Day, we’re spotlighting an iconic artist love story! 💘✨

You may know Georgia O’Keeffe from her vibrant American Modernist paintings, and Alfred Stieglitz as a famed pioneer of modern photography. But these artists share romantic history!

Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz met in 1916 at Stieglitz’s Gallery 291. The two hit it off and their personal and artistic lives immediately began to intertwine. Upon receiving a series of O’Keeffe’s charcoal drawings, Stieglitz became the first gallerist to exhibit O’Keeffe’s work and later her first solo show. As their careers grew together, O’Keeffe became Stieglitz’s muse—their relationship is marked by thousands of passionate love letters, sometimes two or three a day, and over 300 photographic portraits of O’Keeffe. Despite their complex relationship, Stieglitz’s intimate photographs of O’Keeffe’s hands, body, and face show how their love is forever immortalized in their work.
