On this day in 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison after serving 27 years of a life sentence for a conviction of sabotage against South Africa’s racist system of government know as apartheid. He would go on to end apartheid and become the country’s first democratically elected president and its first Black one. Mandela is considered a universal symbol of social justice, and often cited alongside Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. as one of the 20th century’s exemplary anti-racist and anti-colonial leaders.
