If you knew our dog Einstein, you’d understand he was more than just a pet, he was family.  Seventeen years old — he’s been with my youngest almost his whole life.

In Hawaiian culture, where my grandmother was from, pets are never “just pets.” They are kahu — an honored attendant, guardian, protector, keeper. Not an “owner’s” possession, but a soul entrusted to your care, woven into your own spirit. A kahu is given the sacred duty of safeguarding something precious, and what they protect becomes part of them forever.

Einstein was part of us. My guardian. My child’s companion. My friend.

In his final months, our family became his hospice — providing loving, around-the-clock care to keep him comfortable and surrounded by warmth. We are so deeply grateful to the beautiful people of Lap of Love, (thank you Dr Amy) who gave us the gift of a gentle alternative — allowing Einstein to pass peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, his ʻohana. Thank you to smuahpix (Dr Eugene) for the beautiful referral.
