My monthly top 5 CPD brings together the learning I think matters most right now for patient care, equity, and GP wellbeing.

1. HbA1c variation in primary care

Real-world data shows HbA1c fluctuates far more than we’ve assumed – especially in people with established or poorly controlled diabetes. This matters because a single result can mislead diagnosis and treatment. For us – GPs, this has big implications for NICE-aligned care, shared decision-making, and avoiding harm, particularly in higher-risk and deprived populations.

2. The Fairer Practice Toolkit

Health inequalities won’t reduce themselves. I choose this toolkit because it moves beyond awareness into practical action. The toolkit helps practices prioritise what makes the biggest difference, even with limited time and resources, and supports sustainable, evidence-based change for patients who need it most.

3. Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is common, devastating, and often hidden. General practice is one of the few places where it can be safely identified. Therefore strengthening confidence in recognising and responding to abuse helps protect our patients, meets safeguarding responsibilities, and supports trauma-informed, compassionate care that can genuinely save lives.

4️. Challenging consultations

We all face them – and they affect patient safety and GP wellbeing. This course stood out for its practical, empathetic strategies to de-escalate tension, set boundaries, and maintain trust, even in emotionally charged or complex encounters.

5️. Managing addictions in primary care

With alcohol- and drug-related deaths at record highs, this event feels essential. The conference reflects on 30 years of progress while tackling today’s realities, equipping GPs with up-to-date harm-reduction and evidence-based approaches to improve outcomes for patients, families, and communities.
