🚀 “No insurance, no space activities.”

That was the warning last week at the first-ever UN Space Debates during #STSC2026

In a new Medium article, Dr. Nathaniel Dailey reflects on a question the space sector can no longer avoid:

Who pays when space debris causes damage — and what happens if responsibility cannot be clearly traced?

🛰️ Inmarsat-6 F2 — ~$385M claim
🛰️ Paz SAT NG — ~$400M claim

In both cases, no one could confirm whether the damage was caused by debris or natural particles.

If a future collision is clearly linked to human-made debris, insurers could raise premiums, limit coverage, or make some orbits difficult to insure.

The debate also explored solutions:
• Debris removal is still technically complex
• Costs are falling, but scaling it requires international coordination
• A shared, trusted picture of what’s in orbit is essential

Panelists agreed on key principles: transparency, clear authorization, and strong safety standards.

The question is no longer if governance is needed — but how and when.
