When Seollal comes around, both the ones giving and the ones receiving are thinking the same thing.

“How much should I give this year?”
“How much am I getting?” 🧧

So what’s actually an “appropriate” amount for Sebaetdon? And does your country have anything similar?

💡 Sebaetdon: New Year’s money given to younger family members after performing a traditional bow (sebae) on Seollal. 🧧

It’s a beautiful tradition, but let’s be honest — if you have a big family, it can turn into a financial burden real fast. According to a survey by the financial journal Pay Attention, “sebaetdon and holiday expenses” ranked as the most stressful part of Seollal.

You can’t really skip it, so the question becomes: how much is right? Inflation plays a role too. Up until 2024, 50,000 KRW (about $35) was considered the most appropriate amount. In 2025, 100,000 KRW (about $70) took the top spot.

And here’s the funny part 🤣 The giving generation says 50,000 KRW is fair. The receiving generation says 100,000 KRW sounds about right. Of course.

At the end of the day, sebaetdon is about sharing blessings, kind words, and good energy for the new year.

Hopefully it stays a warm tradition — not a pressure — and continues in a way that fits everyone’s situation. 🧧✨

세뱃돈은 아름다운 전통이지만, 가족이 많다면 솔직히 경제적인 부담이 되기도 합니다. 금융 브랜드 저널 ‘페이어텐션’ 설문에 따르면, 설날 가장 부담되는 요소 1위가 ‘세뱃돈·각종 경비’였다고 해요.

안 줄 수는 없으니 결국 고민은 “얼마가 적당한가”로 이어지죠. 물가도 인식에 영향을 줍니다. 2024년까지는 5만 원이 적정 금액 1위였지만, 2025년에는 10만 원이 1위를 차지했습니다.

웃픈 포인트는 주는 세대는 5만 원이 적당하다고 하고, 받는 세대는 10만 원이 적당하다고 답했다는 점입니다 🤣

결국 세뱃돈은 복을 나누고, 덕담을 전하고, 마음을 나누는 풍습입니다. 이 아름다운 전통이 부담이 아니라, 각자의 상황에 맞게 이어지는 따뜻한 문화로 남았으면 좋겠어요 🧧✨
