This #MuseumMonday, we’re celebrating Presidents’ Day by highlighting the connection between Charles Deering and President Ulysses S. Grant 🇺🇸

While serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed abroad, Deering’s diplomacy and character left a lasting impression during Grant’s famous post-presidential world tour.

“During the four years at the Naval Academy, Charles Deering not only won distinction in the classroom, but in an equally outstanding manner he won the respect, and the affection of all his associates, whether students or instructors. Soon after graduation he served on the Flagship of the European Squadron. At a later time he was assigned to duty in Asiatic waters. It was after he had become acquainted with the ports and the peoples of the Orient, that General Ulysses S. Grant made his famous trip around the world. General and Mrs. Grant were so much attracted to him because of his courteous and affable manners and his diplomacy in dealing with foreign officials, that he was asked by them to serve as their personal escort in the Far East.”
