In this image snapped by NASAHubble, you’re looking at three interacting galaxies that are on a collision course. Eventually, the three will merge and become one.

The galaxies in this trio are all located within 50,000 light-years of each other, which might sound far to us, but is relatively close quarters for something as massive as a galaxy. For reference, our Milky Way galaxy spans 100,000 light-years across, and our nearest large galactic neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy, is over 2.5 million light-years away from Earth.

This image comes from astronomers using Hubble to study how the largest galaxies came to be. It’s thought that the most massive galaxies in the universe might come from the merging of multiple smaller galaxies, like this one.
