Happy birthday, Toni Morrison 🎂

Toni Morrison (1931-2019) was born as Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio. She graduated from Howard University with a degree in English and later pursued a master’s degree in American Literature at Cornell University. In 1965, Morrison became a fiction editor at Random House, where she worked for 20 years and played a significant role in promoting the works of Black writers. She then went on to teach literature and writing at Princeton University.

Morrison is widely regarded as one of the most influential and celebrated writers of the 20th century, known for her powerful exploration of race, identity, and the African-American experience. During her lifetime, she authored 11 novels as well as children’s books and essay collections. Among them were celebrated works like “Song of Solomon,” which received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977, and “Beloved,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988; a film adaptation of “Beloved” was released, starring Oprah Winfrey. In 1993, Morrison became the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature and in 2012 was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Morrison’s writing often encouraged readers to confront uncomfortable truths about racism and oppression, while also celebrating the resilience and strength of marginalized communities. “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (2019)” is a documentary about her life and career.
