Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is heading for the US for the inaugural working session of Trump's Board of Peace and hailed the new international body as a potential replacement for the 'paralyzed' UN. "Something important is about to happen, because in the last 10-15 years, the major international organizations tasked with guarding world peace have essentially become paralysed. The best example of this is the UN, but it is not the only one," Orban said. The 'Board of Peace' was initially conceived as part of a 20-point US framework aimed at stabilizing and reconstructing post-war Gaza. However, its published charter makes no reference to Gaza and instead names Trump as 'Chairman for Life'. According to the charter, three-year memberships are granted by invitation, while permanent status is reportedly available to any country contributing $1 billion to the board’s peace-building fund. Around 30 countries have joined so far, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Argentina and Egypt. The inaugural working session is set to take place in Washington at the Donald J Trump US Institute of Peace. Trump has announced that member states have pledged more than $5 billion towards initial humanitarian and security initiatives. While regional Middle East powers including Turkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel - as well as emerging nations such as Indonesia - have joined the board, many other nations have been more cautious expressing dismay at the prospect of the demise of the UN. #boardofpeace #orban #hungary #un
