Former Peruvian president José Jerí was ousted by Congress on Tuesday, February 18 after only four months in office, becoming the third consecutive president removed from office. The 39-year-old right-wing politician was the eighth president that Peru had in less than a decade since he took office in October following the impeachment of former president Dina Boluarte. Jerí was first sworn into the Peruvian Congress in 2021, taking the seat of former Peruvian president Martin Vizcarra after Vizcarra was disqualified from holding public office, and was accused of sexual assault in January 2025 though the case was shelved in August due to lack of evidence

This comes after Jerí was found to be holding secret meetings with Chinese businessmen who had ties to the government while attempting to disguise himself. The scandal, known as “Chifagate,” follows other controversies of Jerí awarding state contracts to women after alleged late-night meetings at the presidential palace. The Peruvian Congress will vote for a new interim president tonight around 6 p.m. local time just two months ahead of the country’s next presidential election on April 12.
