I’ve been thrifting for more than 20 years, I’ve sold my finds to celebrities, and I wrote a bestselling book about how to do it well.

And I never buy mass-produced wall art printed on canvas.

Here’s why: printing directly onto canvas is a relatively recent mass-market technique. If something is meant to look like an oil painting but has a digitally printed surface and perfectly machine-stretched edges, it’s not vintage — it’s décor designed to feel vintage.

That doesn’t make it ugly or unappealing, but it does mean it’s not scarce (and scarcity signals value).

If I’m buying art secondhand, I want one of three things:• an original painting• a signed/numbered print• something old enough to have real patina
If you want to learn how to spot value fast and thrift with intention, follow me. I share what to look for and what to leave behind.
