Almost all of my tutorials include a written breakdown in the caption. Not this one. This transition takes me back to where I first learned it: the yoga rooms of early 2000s Los Angeles. And I want to share that story instead. If you’re here to learn it, watch on repeat! The tools are there 😘

Early 2000s Santa Monica was a very specific moment in yoga. It’s where I first experienced the sweaty, fast-paced vinyasa style I still teach today — arm balances, inversions, funky transitions — in studios like Power Yoga, where the practice was evolving in real time.

Back then, you showed up to class.
You’d pack into krista_cahill_yoga and brockleecahill classes just to watch them press to handstand and dream about doing it one day. Or take kathrynbudig class at yogaworks on Montana and practice right next to Bill Murray. My favorite was squeezing into vinnievinyasa packed classes to flow through Surya A with Janis Joplin blaring on the speakers.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of joining hundreds of yogis; sweating in tiny waiting rooms before cramming into even sweatier studios, mats inches apart, practicing next to strangers who slowly became your people🫶Studios were packed in a way that’s hard to imagine now.

If you wanted to learn a transition, an inversion, a technique… you showed up. Maybe you caught a pose breakdown in yogajournal or layogamagazine A few photos. A paragraph or two. That was it.

Those studios — and those teachers — shaped my practice. Much of what I share in my yoga trainings now is rooted in those rooms. This tutorial is a small nod to where it all began.

Being in the room changes you 📍Trying it. Feeling it. Getting feedback. That kind of learning stays.

If you feel drawn to that kind of learning, we’ll be practicing together in Thailand starting July 22nd. If it’s calling you, comment “THAILAND” and I’ll send you details
