After an open meeting, FCC Chair Brendan Carr said that networks should operate under the assumption that shows don’t qualify for long-standing regulatory exemptions that allowed them to discuss political candidates on their shows without having to meet unwieldy requirements. Failing to comply, he said, will trigger an enforcement action.⁠

Talk shows once protected as news may now face partisan scrutiny. Interviews with candidates aren’t off the table but equal-time rules could make them harder to pull off. The move comes after Stephen Colbert said CBS axed a James Talarico appearance on #TheLateShow to avoid triggering regulations. ⁠
