A court in South Korea has sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol to life in prison after convicting him of leading an insurrection tied to his failed December 2024 martial law bid.⁣

Judges said Yoon conspired with then–defence minister Kim Yong-hyun to deploy troops to parliament in an attempt to paralyse its functions and undermine the constitutional order. ⁣

Presiding judge Jee Kui-youn said the actions amounted to insurrection and caused “enormous social cost.”⁣
⁣
Prosecutors had sought the death penalty. Yoon’s legal team said they are considering an appeal.⁣
