Republican candidate for governor Ken McFeeters has appealed the decision by the state GOP steering committee not to hold a hearing to whether Sen. Tommy Tuberville meets the eligibility requirement to run for governor.

McFeeters repeated his call for Tuberville to release state income tax returns and other records that he said would show whether Tuberville meets the residency requirement in the Alabama Constitution.

Section 117 of the constitution says the governor and lieutenant governor must be “resident citizens of this state at least seven years next
before the date of their election.”

McFeeters says he believes Tuberville should be required to show documents establishing he lives in the Auburn home that his wife and son bought in 2017 and not at his multi-million dollar home in Santa Rosa Beach where he moved after retiring from coaching.

McFeeters included an example of what he said is evidence that Tuberville does not live in Auburn. “The United States Senate reimburses senators for flights to and from their home residence. In 2021, Tuberville submitted nine flights, listed as going “home”, and ALL nine were flights to Florida. Not Alabama.”

“A Carfax report on his personal truck shows that in 2024 ALL recorded services (4) were done in Destin, Florida. Then, suddenly and suspiciously, after announcing his run for governor in 2025, his vehicle starts getting serviced in Auburn, Alabama (3 services). Meanwhile, the service history on my truck shows consistent service around Birmingham — where I actually live," he said.

McFeeters said if the state Republican Party declines to hold a hearing on his challenge it will be sending the wrong message. The primary is May 19.
