The Nebraska baseball team is back in Lincoln after a strong showing at the MLB Desert Invitational in Arizona, where the Huskers won three of four games.

In their only loss, a Monday matchup against Stanford, Nebraska tallied 12 hits, signaling a strong start to the season.

In the opener, ace Ty Horn delivered an impressive performance, striking out six. Horn said his focus this season is doing whatever he can to help the team succeed.

“Becoming more of a better teammate, that’s kind of what we preach here,” Horn said. “Once you know what your role is, what you’re going to do, just being a better teammate and being there for the guys is the most important thing in this culture. I’m not throwing 100, I’m not hitting home runs, but I’m just doing anything I can to put the team in a good position to win.”

Horn has previously reached the upper 90s with his fastball, but he said he is now focused more on command and movement. He has emphasized staying behind his fastball to create vertical break and has mixed in a “wipeout” changeup to keep hitters off balance.

While strikeouts can be appealing, Horn said efficiency is his priority.

“I think strikeouts are sexy, that’s a given, they’re awesome,” he said. “But if I can get one pitch, one out rather than a strikeout any time of the day, I’ll take that.”

Horn is expected to take the mound again Friday when Nebraska faces No. 15 Louisville in Arlington, Texas. The Huskers will also play Kansas State on Saturday and No. 16 Florida State on Sunday.
