Conversion therapy isn’t just harmful theoretically. Our latest research shows that the harm is both measurable and lasting. Transgender and nonbinary young people report higher rates of conversion therapy exposure than their cisgender peers.

The timing matters, too. LGBTQ+ young people exposed to conversion therapy within the past year reported the highest suicide attempt rates (35%) For those who said they were exposed to these practices more than five years ago, their suicide attempt rate was still high at 20%.The hurt lingers.

As the country awaits a decision in Chiles v. Salazar, a Supreme Court case that could impact whether states can continue protecting young people from conversion therapy, this data is more important than ever.

Understanding when harm occurs most acutely can help inform policy and prevention efforts. Remember, data make a difference. And this data is clear.
