Four hidden gems to discover at some of the National Trust for Scotland’s most extraordinary places. 📸

During National Lottery Open Week (7-15 March), you can visit for free - just bring along a National Lottery ticket.

📍 Castle Fraser
Did you know this castle has a secret spy hole? Castle Fraser in Aberdeenshire is one of the most impressive-looking castles in Scotland - right in the heart of Scotland's Castle Country. The original core dates from 1450, making it one of the oldest in our care. The Laird's Lug is the hiding place where people were sent to eavesdrop on visitors in the Great Hall.

📍 Canna House
This wee place may be one of the smaller islands of Scotland, but it packs a punch when it comes to history, scenery and wildlife - even at four miles long and one mile wide. Canna House has its own treasure trove; the collection includes wallpaper featured in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and footage of the first commercial service airplane to land at the beach airport on Barra.

📍 Robert Smail's Printing Works
If you’re looking for unusual things to do in the Scottish Borders, why not try your hand at typesetting at this operational letterpress printer in Innerleithen? It’s the oldest working one in the UK. Your pressing questions can be answered on one of our guided tours. Plus, discover the origin of phrases like “mind your Ps and Qs.”

📍 House of Dun
Want more ideas for places to visit in Angus? Enter: House of Dun in Montrose. It took thirteen years to complete the mansion you see here today, and once you notice the intricate, extravagant details, you’ll understand why. The saloon’s plasterwork has some interesting features - take the shells, basket and violin; they’re all real objects that were dipped in plaster and fixed to the wall.
