In 1993, the British tech series Bad Influence! took viewers behind the scenes of Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood — a place few guests ever got to see.

During the visit, host Z. Wright explored the attraction from the inside out, examining both its cinematic storytelling and its complex engineering. He moved through the Institute of Future Technology preshow, entered the ride control room where the attraction was monitored and operated, stepped inside the massive Omnimax Dome theater, and visited the film projection booth. He also went beneath the DeLorean simulator vehicle to inspect the powerful hydraulic motion base system that delivered the ride’s groundbreaking movement.

Within the storyline of the attraction, Doc Brown sends the DeLorean party in pursuit of Biff Tannen, launching riders into the future to 2015, back to the Ice Age, and even into the heart of an active volcano in primeval Hill Valley. After a chaotic chase through time, Doc ultimately succeeds in bumping Biff back to the present, where he crashes into the Institute of Future Technology. Biff briefly thanks Doc and the riders for the “rescue,” only to be quickly restrained by security as the adventure comes to an end.

The preshow featured appearances by Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown and Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen, tying the attraction directly to the beloved film trilogy.

Despite its groundbreaking technology and popularity throughout the 1990s, the attraction experienced declining popularity in the early 2000s. This downturn ultimately led to its closure in 2007. The ride system and show building were later reimagined and reopened as The Simpsons Ride on May 19, 2008.

Bad Influence! aired on CITV from 1992 to 1996 and centered on video games and emerging computer technology during the 16-bit era. Frequently described as a youth-focused counterpart to Tomorrow’s World, the series spotlighted innovation and cutting-edge advancements, making its visit to one of Universal’s most technologically ambitious attractions a natural fit. This particular segment came from Season 2, Episode 6, which originally aired on October 14, 1993.

This rare look back captures a moment in theme park history when motion simulation and cinematic storytelling were redefining immersive entertainment.
