Finished in 1892 as a summer cottage for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt, this Beaux Arts masterpiece was unparalleled in opulence for an American house when completed.

Birthday gift goals: Marble House was Alva Vanderbilt’s 39th birthday present from her husband William - talk about setting the bar high! When she divorced him in 1895, she kept the house and transformed it into something even more powerful.

Historic activism: Alva Vanderbilt Belmont used Marble House as the site of women’s suffrage rallies, turning this symbol of wealth into a beacon for women’s rights. The Chinese Tea House on the grounds became her suffrage headquarters!
