Everything in life has seasons, and its always bittersweet when the last out occurs at Phil Welch Stadium and the stadium lights go dark.

In a world full of Artifical Intelligence, there is something so authentic that can only be found at places like Phil Welch Stadium.

We start each summer with a countdown to Mustang Opening Day. We know we’re going to have a baseball game, but if you know anything about baseball, there’s also a certain level of love and romance.

The kids who play in our Dream Factory and Make a Wish game on the field and we find out one of our kids actually is a Make a Wish kid. A car full of children going around the stadium with their hands extended for a high five. The parade of children running after a foul ball, or the giggles after pieing their parents in the face or running from their Dad in the outfield.

Honoring legends who once signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1950s to celebrating a potential 2025 Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Candidate with the Kansas City Royals. A special birthday serenade from Coach Kastner, or going home with a team autographed baseball.

We can now take Coach Kastner’s voice home with us all off season with his talking bobblehead, or maybe you can pop in and see him on a weeknight at Adam’s now that his schedule has opened up a little.

Darius’s smile can light up a room. His swing can light up the scoreboard. Any one of our outfielders at any game making a diving catch. Truman Bodenhausen adding another Glove Glove. Jaren Guck adding a new name to his strikeout list, aka the Gucket List. Our manager Johnny Coy scooping up his son in a giant hug after a Mustangs victory so they can watch a fireworks show together on the field.

You might jump into a conga line or start doing the chicken dance, or the YMCA comes on the radio. There are certain songs that will just take you right back to a summer night at Phil Welch. Hopping into a golf card and remembering your trip into the stadium. When Sluggerr and Fredbird showed up to Phil Welch and threw a party on July 3, or when Miss Missouri Courtney Rowe and Mary Grace Rice lost by half a hot dog in their hot dog eating contest with Tyler Lupfer, when he wasn’t in his inflatable chicken costume.

All winter long, we dream of nights like these. Lines to the parkway to get inside the stadium and get your own Mustangs Hawaiian shirt. A full 360 of fireworks at the stadium on the 4th of July. A stranger that just so happens to sit next to you one game. That stranger turns to a friend, and next thing you know, they are like family. You notice a former Mustangs player shows up to a game, and then you realize it’s 5 years since they last played. Time never slows, the stories continue to grow.

Yogi Berra himself once played at Phil Welch Stadium. He is quoted as saying, “The game of baseball is never over until it’s over.” We’re nowhere close to being over here in St. Joseph. Until next time, Mustangs Nation.
