Do you know a local lifesaver in your community? Here are four from San Diego: Hannaford, Kimberly, Naomi and Lucia!

Last year in July, they worked together to save a person’s life after he collapsed on the pool deck at the UCSanDiego Canyonview Aquatic Center.

Lifeguards Hannaford Bush and Kimberly Holland took turns performing CPR and providing rescue breaths to the unconscious man as Lucia and Naomi helped clear the scene and ensure it was safe for when additional medical help arrived.

“When I started doing chest compressions, it was very much muscle memory at that point. After 30 compressions, I looked to my right, and Kimberly was there with the rescue breath. I cannot describe the amount of relief I felt in that moment because I didn't have to do it alone,” recalled Hannaford.

Sergeant John Martin of the UC San Diego Police Department, who received word of someone in distress and witnessed the lifeguards on scene, says they knew exactly what to do to save a life. “I was amazed by the level of organization. Everyone had the facts, knew exactly what needed to be done and their specific role. You hope this never happens, but because of their practice and dedication, someone’s life was saved.”

Because of the team’s incredible bravery and quick actions, the man’s life was saved and they were awarded Red Cross Lifesaving Awards.
