In McDowell County, West Virginia, many residents say they don’t feel safe drinking water from their tap. Black and brown liquid oozes from aging pipes and contamination left behind from the coal industry. Reports of skin rashes and burns are not uncommon. Many families spend upwards of $150 a month for bottled water, on top of their water bills. “There are people in parts of this county who haven't taken a hot shower in six years or longer because the fumes from the water makes them physically ill,” says Pastor Brad Davis, who leads congregations in McDowell County.
