It’s #StormSurvivorSunday at this sometimes-deceptive historic stunner — the 1887 Howard and Kate Mather House!

Tucked behind the trees on a prominent corner lot, this Victorian home, inspired by Swiss Chalet and Tudor style, can easily be missed while exploring the grand residences of the East End Historic District. Pro tip for maximum viewing: stroll the island’s historic neighborhoods in winter!

Built soon after Howard and Kate were married, the home was constructed on a lot where a previous house had been destroyed in the 1885 fire. The second photo features their wedding announcement, describing it as “one of the most recherché weddings that has occurred in the Island City for years.”
